Fulham skipper Ream, the closest Fulham player to Basham after he landed following an attempted cross, earned praise for staying with the stricken United captain until, and after, medical attention arrived. Ream was one of the fellow players to respond to Basham’s post on Instagram, posting: “Thinking of you pal! Rest up and get right.”

Teammates from the past and present, including as former Blades Phil Jagielka, David McGoldrick, and Aaron Ramsdale, tweeted notes of encouragement. Among Basham’s current teammates, Oli McBurnie and George Baldock showed their support, with the latter writing on Facebook: “The greatest about brother. Everyone is on your side.”

The injury was described as “terrible, horrific” by Blades manager Paul Heckingbottom, who also said that no one ever wants to see that. I’ve been a part of it on the field with a teammate, but it’s awful and much worse when it’s one of your own players. We tried to get points for Bash in the second half while keeping him in mind.

Marco Silva, the Fulham manager, continued, “Chris Basham had a horrible moment in that circumstance. I, along with the rest of the football team, wish him a speedy recovery from his serious injuries. He has our best wishes for the future. He will undoubtedly receive support from the people that matter the most to him: his family, friends, and Sheffield United Football Club.”
