According to Gabby Agbonlahor, Tottenham Hotspur will have to “do everything in their power” to secure Ivan Toney’s signature in January if they are to finish fourth in the Premier League. Toney’s ban for FA’s betting rules expires in January, and he is expected to be a top transfer target in the next window.

According to The Daily Mirror, Toney could be up for grabs in a three-way race between Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal, who are all keeping an eye on the striker.

The Mirror said Arsenal are particularly interested in the Brentford star and would have made him an offer in the summer had it not been for his ban.

The Daily Mirror also reported that Brentford would be willing to pay at least £60 million for Toney, who will have 18 months remaining on his contract in January.

Spurs, according to Agbonlahor, would be making a serious blunder if they did not follow through on their interest in the Bees’ star, as Ange’s side are in dire need of a first-choice centre-forward.

The pundit said: “If I’m Spurs, I’m wanting this done now. They should get it all done, agreed today – and then he comes in on 1 January and plays towards the end of the month.

“Spurs need an out-and-out striker. Johnson and Richarlison aren’t the answer, they are players who can fill in on the left and right. Toney is an outstanding player, and imagine the service he’d get – especially from Maddison.

“They’ve got to make sure this happens because look out there – who else is available? It could be what costs them top four in the end, not having a top striker.”

There are a number of factors that will influence Tottenham’s decision to pursue Toney, including the form of Richarlison and whether Son will continue to flourish in the number nine position. However, I believe it would be a mistake for Spurs to let Arsenal land Toney without a fight.
