Tottenham receive boost to sign Chelsea star Chalobah
Trevoh Chalobah of Chelsea may have to be sold by the Blues in January as a result of FFP rules, according to Football Insider, giving Tottenham Hotspur a major assist in their pursuit of the player.
Spurs decided to reinforce their backline by acquiring Micky van de Ven from VfL Wolfsburg in a £43 million deal during the recently closed transfer window after having issues with their porous defense previous season.
They appeared to be trying to add a second defender this summer, though. Edmond Tapsoba and Lloyd Kelly were among the players regarded as being significant targets.
According to reports, Tottenham made a deadline-day approach to buy Kelly while starting negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen to sign Tapsoba. However, in the end, they were unable to facilitate a deal for any of them.
Tottenham reportedly made a last-ditch effort to get Chalobah after failing to sign their main targets, but they were unable to reach an agreement for him before the transfer window closed.
Chalobah to Tottenham
Now that Tottenham have acknowledged that they are lacking in depth at the position, it has been reported that they would seek to rekindle their interest in signing the Chelsea star by bringing in a new defender in January.
Report claims that Chelsea wants to offload Chalobah in January in order to adhere to the FFP rules after spending more than £400 million this summer. Thus, Spurs’ ability to sign the Englishman is a major plus.
Although Thomas Tuchel is a big supporter of the defender, the article states that Tottenham will have difficulty getting Chalobah because Bayern Munich previously indicated interest in signing him but were unable to do so. The Bavarian club might decide to rekindle their interest in January, though.
Chalobah is a skilled footballer who can play both right-back and center-back. He can play out of the back and is quick, strong, good in the air, and comfortable doing so. He also makes outstanding defensive contributions.
The 24-year-old so boasts the skills essential to succeed in Ange Postecoglou’s system, and should Tottenham decide to sign him, he would be a wise acquisition.
But it would be intriguing to see if Spurs opt to make a serious approach to capture Chalobah, who is estimated to be worth roughly £16 million by Transfermarkt, in the forthcoming transfer window.
