Tottenham transfer truths revealed as club brutally told they’re beneath midfielder in scathing blow

Tanguy Ndombele’s departure from Tottenham was for real, as the midfielder allegedly told Genoa that they weren’t on his level.

Ndombele was acquired by Spurs from Lyon for almost £60 million in 2019. The Frenchman has only appeared 91 times for Tottenham in all competitions since the record transfer, and he hasn’t done much during that time.

As a result, he was loaned to three different clubs.

Ndombele moved to Napoli the next season after returning to Lyon for the 2020–21 season. He was given several options to leave for a third loan term this summer, but Ange Postecoglou, the new Spurs manager, did not have him in his plans.

The two most obvious options were Nottingham Forest and Galatasaray, and it was the latter group that managed to sign both him and his partner Davinson Sanchez.

While there were reports of interest in both of those parties, and Galatasaray undoubtedly closed the deal, another party found themselves in a very advantageous position to capture Ndombele.

Genoa was, in fact, the favorite to sign him for a while.

Tottenham had first dispatched a representative to Italy to discuss business at one of the Serie A team’s early-season games, according to La Repubblica as cited by (Napoli Magazine).

Ndombele brutally turns down Genoa

The article indicates that a private aircraft from London was scheduled so that the new signing would be ready as soon as possible, indicating that the first phase of discussions had definitely gone smoothly.

Ndombele, however, ended negotiations when he delivered a stinging blow that implied the Serie A team was beneath him.

According to reports, he actually said to Genoa, “You are a newly promoted side, I want to play in the Champions League.”

Galatasaray granted his dream for him to play in Europe’s top league, thus it appears that everything went well for the Frenchman.

Ndombele must perform to avoid ignominy

The question is whether he is in a position to make those demands.

Ndombele hasn’t exactly been a shining star over the past few seasons, despite the nine times he played in the Champions League last year, where he scored and assisted.

It seems a little unusual for a player to seek Champions League football while being unable to play for Tottenham.

In fact, if he had been good enough to stay with Spurs this season, he would not have played any European football at all.

In any event, he now has it and will want to make the most of it because his contract with Tottenham is about to expire and he wants to leave enough of an impression to land a permanent job.

He’ll also need to succeed because if he rejected down a chance to play in the Champions League only to lose, he’d seem foolish.
