Owen Hargreaves insists £22m Tottenham player is not good at creating chances
On the Kelly and Wrighty Show, Hargreaves expressed his opinion that Son isn’t imaginative enough to be played widely.
Son was utilised as a striker by Ange Postecoglou on Saturday when Spurs defeated Burnley 5-2 at Turf Moor. The 31-year-old, who took Richarlison’s position because he was out of shape, scored a fantastic hat-trick that day.
Prior to Saturday’s game, Son, the new Tottenham captain, has yet to score or contribute an assist this season when playing as a left winger.
But Hargreaves believes that because he can score with both feet, he is ideally suited to play down the center for Spurs.
Hargreaves on Son
Hargreaves asserted Son isn’t as creative as someone like Dejan Kulusevski on the Kelly and Wright Show.
The commentator remarked, “I prefer Son when he’s, I know this sounds silly, closer to the goal and shooting. “I understand that he enters from the left and moves inside, but I believe that his greatest move is to take a short touch and finish.
“I don’t think he’s a talented artist; he reminds me of Kulusevski. Because of his ability to move left or right, I believe he is better down the middle.
“With his weaker foot, I believe he is the best finisher. He can go any way because he hits the ball so cleanly.
“Everybody loves Sonny – he’s like the nicest guy because he’s always smiling. I think everybody wants to see him do well and I’m just happy to see Tottenham play some good stuff.”
Son has provided Tottenham with a respectable creative outlet throughout the years, contributing 80 assists in 377 games.
However, he didn’t offer a single assist in all competitions last season, and with Postecoglou’s current system, he appears more at ease playing through the middle.
The £22 million player’s talents are in and around the box, and it’s fair to say that after coming in to replace Richarlison on Saturday, he had quite the impact.
