Despite submitting bids totaling £60 million on deadline day, Tottenham’s raids on Chelsea and Bournemouth failed, and the reasons why have since come to light.

On deadline day, Spurs made their fair share of transactions, with Brennan Johnson’s £47 million arrival serving as the main draw.

The former Nottingham Forest forward will give Postecoglou’s attack another exciting option. Johnson is capable of playing anywhere along the frontline, but Sky Sports had predicted he would mostly play on the flanks.

Japhet Tanganga also finished a loan switch to Augsburg with a conditional obligation to purchase.

The clause, reportedly worth €6 million (about £5.1 million), is dependent on a certain number of appearances and Augsburg escaping relegation from the Bundesliga.

According to a recent report from the Evening Standard, Kelly’s probable hiring actually depended on Dier departing. Postecoglou and Tottenham were powerless to react as Dier applied the brakes.

Similar details apply to Gallagher, whose potential transfer to Spurs is said to depend on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s first departing.

Fulham made a last-minute attempt to replace Joao Palhinha by making a bid for Hojbjerg.

However, Fulham did not need to sign Hojbjerg as Palhinha’s transfer to Bayern Munich collapsed after the German deadline of 5 p.m. expired.

Furthermore, it appeared from a number of sources that the Dane wasn’t particularly eager to join the Cottagers to begin with.

As a result, Spurs’ moves for Gallagher and Kelly diminished as Hojbjerg and Dier remained where they were.

The Standard came to the conclusion that Chelsea values Gallagher at £50 million regardless, £10 million more than Spurs’ £40 million offer.
